Newburgh Man Arrested After Alleged High Speed Chase
NEWBURGH -- A 26-year-old Newburgh man was being held by police Saturday after allegedly leading them on an early-morning high-speed chase through the Town of Newburgh.
James L. Aleixo, 26, of Robin Road in the Town of Newburgh, was charged with reckless endangerment, a felony, as well as several misdemeanor charges and traffic violations.
Town of Newburgh police said an officer attempted to stop Aleixo’s 1991 Ford Escort for allegedly speeding on Gidney Avenue around 2:20 a.m. Saturday.
Aleixo allegedly refused to stop, and led police on a chase through the Gardnertown area of the town, traveling at high rates of speed and passing stop signs and traffic lights without regard for the safety of other motorists, police said.
Police placed a strip of spikes across the road, near the intersection of Lakeside Road and Route 300, which caused three of the tires on the vehicle to deflate. Aleixo then fled on foot with Newburgh and state police giving chase.
He was eventually surrounded and surrendered, police said. Aleixo was being held in the Town of Newburgh police lockup pending arraignment.
