Police Officer / Volunteer Firefighter ARRESTED and Criminally Charged with FELONY Arson
NEWBURGH – A police officer who is also a volunteer firefighter has been charged with arson, accused of setting two fires last fall in Rockland County.
Deputies said 29-year-old Thomas Alexander is accused of setting fire to a Pomona, Rockland County, office building in September and a furniture store in October.
In both cases, he responded with the Hillcrest Fire Department to fight the fires.
Alexander joined the fire departments about 11 years ago, Detective Shari Moody-Dennison said in published reports. He recently moved from Rockland County to Orange County.
A police officer in Newburgh for two years, he was suspended without pay from the City of Newburgh department pending an internal investigation, Deputy Chief Michael Ferara said.
Alexander, facing two FELONY, arson counts, he posted $5,000 bail Thursday. A hearing is scheduled today in Ramapo Town Court.
