A Wappingers Falls woman and her daughter were saved Sunday evening when a Poughkeepsie man rescued them from the Hudson River at Waryas Park in the City of Poughkeepsie.

About 5:15 p.m., Marie Tenorio, 37, was teaching her 10-year-old daughter, Deana Hernandez, how to swim when a strong current took hold of Hernandez, forcing her south, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office said.

Tenorio swam after her daughter but also was caught in the current. Hernandez wore two small floating devices around her arms while Tenorio had no flotation device, police said.

Deputies said bystander Michael Delcastillo, 23, jumped into the river, swam and caught up with Hernandez near the Mid-Hudson Bridge as the sheriff's marine unit arrived.

Delcastillo brought the girl to the boat, then swam toward Tenorio. Deputies said Delcastillo reached Tenorio, who was exhausted from the ordeal, and helped her grab a pole extended from the boat.

Tenorio, Hernandez and Delcastillo were treated at the scene by Alamo Ambulance and released. Poughkeepsie city police assisted at the scene.
